The Dorchester House Stingray swim team has a swim meet scheduled for Friday the Warm-ups will begin @ 5:30 PM. All are encouraged to stop by and support the team. Senior Guard Greg Bellamy has worked very hard to organize & implement a vigorous training regime for the dotwell/DH Stingrays. Peter Nash and Paul Hill have both been instrumental in lending organizational support and assistance. Although still a work in progress, we here on the DH Pool staff are very excited to see the enthusiastic response of the team member participants and the always valued support of parents, friends, etc. We hope that all may find time in their very busy schedules to stop by and lend a cheer!

Monday March 10 Waking Ned Divine 1998 (91 min.) When word reaches two elderly best friends that someone in their tiny Irish village has won the national lottery, they go to great lengths to find the winner so they can share the wealth. When they discover the "lucky" winner, Ned Devine, they find he has died of shock upon discovering his win. The Franklin Park Coalition is strengthening and building our youth programs through a new partnership with SCA – the Student Conservation
Association. Based in New Hampshire , SCA is a 50 year old organization that has involved high school and college age youth in outdoor work and service in national parks and forests, and more recently in urban greenspaces. SCA wants to establish a strong presence in Boston ,
beginning this summer. They are supporting three teams of ten young people each in Franklin Park. They are a partnership organization whose orientation is to work with existing community efforts. SCA would like to
meet with others in Boston who are like-minded about providing conservation service

This ride is open to all. Meet at the Boston Common, Brewer Fountain near Park St station. This will be a fairly informal ride and we’re still working out the details but the basic proposed framework is: The ride will begin at 5:30 pm and the proposed route will go from the Boston Common (meeting place 1) and will go to Dorchester Ave. and then proceed down Dorchester Ave. to end in Lower Mills. There will be at least two additional locations to meet and join the ride - the South Bay Center and VietAid at Fields Corner have been proposed. Definite locations and times for these sites TBA. Riders can join or drop off the ride at any point along the route and we plan to ride together as a group obeying all traffic regulations so no one will be dropped. The primary aims of this ride are to allow dotbikers to meet each other while having fun participating in the activity that has brought us together and to promote driver awareness. It’s a baby shower! Mujeres Unidas en Acción is throwing a baby shower for mothers enrolled in our program in time for Mother’s Day. At Mujeres Unidas en Acción (MUA), our mission is to help women to break the barriers that stand in the way of the social and economic growth of Latina women. Our students are mainly single, low-income mothers, the majority of whom live in shelters, with children under the age of five. MUA offers educational and social services, such as English and GED classes, to help mothers enter the workforce and build a better life for their families. All services are free.

Every year we see a range of young pregnant mothers and mothers with newborns. Our women and girls struggle to learn English and computers or obtain their diplomas so they can leave the shelter and find work. They have no one with whom to celebrate their pregnancies or welcome their new babies.

This year, MUA decided to throw a surprise (shhh!) baby shower for those in need. Until May 2nd, we will be collecting the following items to create baskets and gift bags for the moms at our agency. We are accepting drop-off donations for the following items:

Baby girl or baby boy clothing (new or gently used)

Rattles, pacifiers, teethers (new)

The Museum of African American History is proud to present an evening with Bill Cosby, one of the most influential performers of the last half century, and Alvin F. Poussaint, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Judge Baker Children's Center as they lay out their message of hope and empowerment for the black community.
Moderated by producer Callie Crossley, this is an opportunity to listen in on a conversation as these two men share their vision for strengthening America by addressing the issues facing the black community as written in their book,  Come On People: On the Path from Victims to Victors . Built around the themes of Dr. Cosby's popular call-out sessions, in which he has challenged people in towns and cities across America to reclaim and restore their families and communities, Come   On People  is at times challenging as well as inspirational.

The spring meeting of the Friends of the Edward Everett Schoolyard: There is much to discuss as the contracts for the Flannery Archway & Fence have been signed, we have approved the design for the new outdoor classroom, and the school department plans to begin replacing the rest of the current fence after July 1st. Having been awarded an environmental science school designation last spring, the Everett is also working on defining & implementing what that will mean for the Everett.

The Safe Teens/Safe Communities Coalition, that has worked on passage of the funding for the DPH Youth Violence Prevention Program, the Shannon Anti-Gang Violence Grant Program, the YouthWorks Jobs for Teens Program, will be holding a statewide rally/press conference/rally day on Monday March 31 at 1:30 PM at Nurses Hall on the Second Floor of the State House to focus on getting increases in funding for these key programs.

We are organizing this rally/press conference/lobby day jointly with allies from the Metropolitan Mayors Coalition, Massachusetts Major Police Chiefs Association, and Representative Stephen Canessa, and other organizations.

As the musicians make their way towards the competition, trouble rears its head for both sets of challengers: the Liverpool Shamrock Ceilidh Band and the defending champions from Clare, and at the heart of this adversity lie the vengeful interventions of two estranged brothers, Jimmy and John Joe.

Defending Our Lives is a recent Oscar® winning documentary about the magnitude and severity of domestic violence in this country. The women in the documentary are members of 'Battered Women Fighting Back!' a grass-roots organization dedicated to exposing domestic violence as a critical human rights violation threatening the majority of the population: women and children. 'Battered Women Fighting Back!' began as a prison support group for battered women who had killed their abusers, and with the support of human rights activist, Stacey Kabat, developed into a community-based task force of over 100 volunteers.

Defending Our Lives aims to educate people about domestic violence and to spur legislative and judicial reform. It is appropriate for people working on any aspect of this issue, including general education, legal reform, police training, battered women advocacy, counseling, prosecution and defense, human rights activism and community education.  Staff members from the Community Advocacy Program will be present to facilitate a discussion and to provide information on available resources.  This program is in celebration of Women’s History month, and is also part of the Adams St. Branch’s series of programs, Mockingbird Lives!, a series in support of The Big Read of Eastern Massachusetts.

This is a time of activity for the little ones. Come out and enjoy the group.

This workshop will help children improve on their educational skills.

On Saturday, April 26 ^th the city of Boston will once again hold “Boston Shines”. As with previous years, we will be organizing volunteers to help clean the park and the surrounding streets. Unlike other years, however, we are planning to have a neighborhood BBQ following the clean up. With this event, we hope to increase community spirit and solidarity, as well as thank the folks who do their part to help make the park a more beautiful place.

We could use your help in the form of volunteers and donations.

Volunteer needs:

- people to help distribute flyers (prior to event)

- Boston Shines crewmembers

- people to help set up the BBQ

- people to help pick up food, drinks and other supplies

- people to tend the grills

- people to gather information during the BBQ

Donations and loans needed:

- grills

- food (hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, beverages, condiments, chips, desserts)

- plates, napkins, utensils

- ice

- coolers

- fold-out tables

This is a time of story telling for the little ones.

Two Million Minutes is a compelling new documentary film comparing the high school education experience in India, China and the United States . Created by entrepreneur & VC Bob Compton, the film takes the viewer into the homes, classrooms and hangouts of high school students in these three very different cultures. As we follow these high school seniors - a boy and a girl - from each of these countries,a snapshot of global education begins to materialize, from the viewpoint of kids preparing for their futures.

One of the few constants we have in education is time – and approximately 2,000,000 minutes is how long each student has during high school. What the film shows is that students in India , China and the U.S. allocate those precious high school minutes quite differently. Not only does that allocation have implications for the individual's long term career prospects, it has profound implications for the U.S. economy over the next 30 years.

High School students encouraged strongly to attend.

Grow Boston Greener Resident Tree Workshop - first of two Dorchester workshops.

Residents of Boston who attend one of these workshops will learn the "soup to nuts" of the benefits of trees, the importance of selecting the right tree for the right place and the best way to plant and care for a tree in their yard.
