Unity Rally for Children Left Behind

Wednesday, May 21, 3:00 p.m.

Grand Staircase, MA State House

WHY:        Let state lawmakers know that education reform efforts aren’t working! Instead of focusing only on testing for proficiency in a few subjects, education reform should also focus on raising graduation rates, making sure all public schools have equal and adequate resources, and using lots of ways to evaluate student and school progress- not just one test.

WHO:       Youth, teachers, parents, elected officials and everyone else who cares about public education throughout MA are invited to attend. We expect over 500 people. The MA Teachers Association, Boston Teachers Union, Citizens for Public Schools, American Civil Liberties Union, Boston Student Advisory Council, FairTest and The Center for Teen Empowerment are co-hosting the rally.

WHAT:     Show the governor and legislature that youth do care about education! Let’s raise the awareness of policy makers about the unintended effects of school reform, like the high dropout rates in urban schools and the achievement gap between urban and suburban students.  The rally will include speeches by youth and adults about their personal experiences with educational policies. Bring signs and posters if you want and be ready to sign our giant diploma asking the governor for better schools.

Start: 7:00 pm
End: 8:30 pm

You are cordially invited to attend Codman Academy's First Energy
Awareness Open Studios! The tenth graders at Codman Academy Charter
Public School have studied physics this year while also studying the
global energy situation. We have learned that a small number of people
can make a change and that great change begins with education. We are
hosting an Open Studios to exhibit our work and share our knowledge on
important energy topics with our community. Some of the topics we have
studied this year and that will be on display in our studios include:
renewable and nonrenewable energy sources, the greenhouse effect,
global warming, how we get our electricity, the environment and our
health, and green buildings.

Please join us on May 27, 2008 from 6-8pm in the Great Hall in Codman
Square to learn about these and other important energy-related topics.
Free CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs) will be given out to the
first 50 attendees who sign EnergyStar's Change a Light, Change the World? pledge!

On another related note, we are very pleased this year to have won the
National Energy Education Development Project (NEED) Senior Level
School of the Year for Massachusetts award for all of our work with
energy-related topic. Although a delegation of four students will be
attending the Award Ceremony in Washington D.C. this summer, we are even
more excited to share our newfound knowledge with you. We hope to see you
on May 27.

On December
28, 2007 at their three-family home on Bellevue Street in Dorchester
the Zizi celebrated Rebecca Zizi's ninth birthday, by all accounts it
was a joyous time.  Little did the family know that in a few short
hours the family's fortunes would take a tragic & deadly turn.  As
the family slept soundly in their home, a fire broke out and sadly
killed the birthday girl 9-year-old Rebecca Zizi and 11-year-old Rooben
Zizi.
