The Baltimore Oriole is a beautiful songbird which annually migrates to Massachusetts in early May. While they are not yet endangered, their numbers have been diminishing, and the Audobon Society is enlisting the aid of bird lovers and young scientists to count the birds that arrive. “It’s a sin to kill a Mockingbird because all it does is sing.” So says Atticus Finch in the classic novel which takes its name from this sentiment. Draw a picture of the birds you learn about, write a small poem about birds, or write a letter to us about why you love birds.

  This program is in celebration Earth Day, and is also part of the Adams St. Branch’s series of programs, Mockingbird Lives!, a series in support of The Big Read of Eastern Massachusetts.  The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment.
