Pre-College Summer Studio at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (Museum School)

Description:

The Summer Studio is a rigorous studio art program for rising juniors and seniors (or youth who are between 16 and18 yrs old). During the full-time 5-week program, youth explore different media, interact with artists at all points in their careers, and build relationships with other young artists. It is a phenomenal program for young people who are serious about making art.

We have recently received funding which will provide a good number of full residential scholarships to young artists from the Boston community, who could not otherwise afford to attend. These scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, as well as room and board throughout the 5-week program. I am in the process of getting the word out to local youth and youth workers. The application deadline is April 2, 2008 so I am hoping to do workshops and general outreach from now until late March. I am available to do application-assistance-workshops and/or meet individually with youth (and perhaps their families) to discuss the program and the application process.

Now enrolling for adults:

Finding Your Medium meets
for 10 weekly sessions beginning Monday, January 28, from 6pm-8pm.
Improve your drawing and painting skills and try different approaches and
materials
Introduction to Ceramics
8 weekly sessions beginning Wednesday, February 6. Learn the basics of
creating with clay and shaping ceramics on a potter's wheel.

Now enrolling for kids:

Take a Line For A Walk (ages 9-13) teaches the tricks and techniques of
various 2-D drawing materials; 6 weeks starting Monday, January 28, from
3:30-5:30pm. $90

Drawing Discoveries (ages 6-8) puts line to use in many ways, by drawing
movement, exploring the details, textures, and shadows of objects, and
adding color; 6 weeks starting Tuesday, January 29, from 3:30-5:30pm. $90

Art for the Avenue invites children ages 6-14
to explore the world of clay. Create a public sculpture for
Dorchester Avenue! 8 weeks. $80

Students will involve their hands and imaginations in projects inspired by

ideas from nature, building sculpture from recycled materials, and inventing
new creatures in collage and clay. Discover the many levels and shades of
green!

Green, green, what does it mean? What have we heard or felt or seen? Things
that we grow, stuff to re-use, creatures we know, colors we choose . . . We
work with our hands and we see with our eyes, as a green world expands,
bringing shuts of surprise!

GREENWARE!
Ages 10-13
Tuesday, February 19-Friday, February 22: 8:30am -2:30pm
Students will learn how to hand-build unique sculptures with various ceramic
techniques, explore throwing clay on a potters wheel, as well as learn the
process of firing and glazing their work.

Between July 9th and August 10th, Hyde Square Task Force (HSTF), an award-winning youth and community development organization in Jamaica Plain, will be competing to win $100,000 from ReZoom.com based on the number of people who visit the ReZoom website every day and click!

It has been called everything from “American Idol for Charities” to the “most compelling and fun philanthropic program created for non-profits.”
ReZoom.com, a leading authority on baby boomers, is building A Better World.

This spring, HSTF was part of the first round of voting on the site and emerged as the regional winner, for which we were awarded $5,000 and a chance to compete for the grand prize along with 21 other regional winners across the country!

Long reliant on collaborators for space to run our award-winning youth and community development programs, HSTF will be moving to the Cheverus Building (part of the former Blessed Sacrament campus) this summer. This move will make room for our programs to grow and serve more youth than ever before—at least 100 additional youth this year! The new space will include:

• A dance studio for Ritmo en Acciόn and other dance programs
• A music studio for a new music program being developed in partnership with Berklee College of Music
• A computer lab for our Evening Tutorial and Nuestros Jovenes Mentoring Program which provides academic support and college and career counseling
• A classroom and meeting space for our Youth Literacy Tutors, Youth Community Organizers and Community Health Ambassadors.

Winning the national award from ReZoom would finance this move, leaving more resources for the dance, fitness, music, literacy and leadership development activities that will take place there.

Boston Public School students in grades 4 through 8 who live in Dorchester, Roxbury or Mattapan are invited to submit an essay, poem, spoken word or rap song for a Writing Contest on Character to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For the contest, students must tell what character means to them and what they believe Dr. King meant when he said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a national where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
