Sports Night Coordinator

Description:

Part-time – 20-25 hours/week – June 30th – August 22nd Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Fridays 2:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Drop-in Youth Sports Nights offer neighborhood teens a safe place to hang out on summer evenings. Youth age 8-18 play flag football, basketball, baseball, kickball, double dutch, and Frisbee. Some just hang out. A barbecue is set up and hamburgers and hot dogs are grilled for everyone. The Franklin Park Coalition summer youth crews help staff Sports Nights. A crew of ten teens will be on duty each of the three nights helping with the barbecue, leading games, and doing sign-in. Youth crew members also assist with outreach, taking flyers into the adjacent neighborhoods before Sports Night starts to invite young people who are hanging out. read more »

Co-lead a crew of ten high school youth, ages 15-18 for six weeks (Mon-Fri. 8hrs/day). Crew Leaders will train and lead teens doing conservation and landscape projects in Franklin Park and other Boston parks. We are seeking a three-quarter time Program Coordinator, who will work as part of a three person team responsible for the day-to-day operations of a Teen Empowerment Youth Organizing Site and will participate in staff and training functions and conduct special projects in Somerville. This 3/4 position is for 30 hours per week and will have full benefits and 3/4 of the normal salary, depending on education and experience.

Responsibilities of the team include:

* Implementing the TE model including conducting the hiring process to identify teens to work as Youth Organizers and facilitating daily two to three hour sessions with Youth Organizers to create community and city-wide social change initiatives

* Assisting Youth Organizers in preparing and producing the annual Youth Peace Conference

* Participating in training and technical assistance sessions in the use of TE group, behavior management, and organizing methods

* Collaborating with other TE staff on cross-site projects and
agency planning

* Collaborating on special projects and targeted problem solving efforts with community partners, to address issues of critical importance to youth

* Advocating on behalf of youth to ensure their emotional and
physical health and future educational, vocational, and emotional well being

* Evening and some weekend hours required

Job requirements:

* A minimum of two years experience teaching and/or facilitating
groups of teens, preferably urban teens, aged 14-21
* Experience with community organizing, social justice work, and
program development
* Willingness to learn and utilize Teen Empowerment's approach to group facilitation and behavior management.
* A sophisticated understanding of the socio-economic, educational, and political challenges facing urban communities
* Facilitation / conflict resolution / mediation skills
* A bachelors degree or equivalent work experience, higher degree a plus
* Bilingual a plus
* Familiarity with Somerville neighborhoods a plus

Salary range is $21,000-30,000 ( ï¿½ of $28-40,000) dependent on education and
professional experience. Excellent benefits
